The Modern Face of 48forty Sustainability

Written by Jess Bonsall | Apr 14, 2026

Director of ESG Jess Bonsall shares how 48forty Solutions integrates innovative technology and a national asset-based network to drive true circularity across the supply chain. From reclaiming materials to exploring biochar, discover the people and processes behind the modern face of our sustainability mission.

Reducing Environmental Footprint through Circularity

This Earth Month, 48forty, alongside our sister entities Paramount Pallet and Relogistics Services, is highlighting our commitment to keeping transport packaging materials in a state of constant circularity. Rather than allowing wood pallets to head to a landfill, our national network intercepts, repairs, and returns them to the supply chain. These assets cycle through our facilities multiple times before reaching their true end of life. Even then, the process continues as they are dismantled into reclaimed boards or processed into mulch for landscaping and energy production.

Extending Pallet Life Through Sustainable Repair

The pallet repair process is a core example of low-intensity, high-impact sustainability. By prioritizing the use of boards reclaimed from other units, 48forty significantly reduces the energy intensity of every fix by eliminating the need to harvest new timber. The result is a product with an incredibly low carbon footprint, 100% made from recycled materials, that directly benefits the planet while maintaining the strength and integrity required for heavy-duty supply chain operations.

Innovation in Material Recovery and Biochar

Throughout FY26, 48forty is advancing how we manage wood residuals through technological innovation. We are currently partnering with specialists to convert on-site ground wood waste into biochar. While biochar has been used in agriculture for decades, utilizing it as a carbon source to improve soil health and agricultural yields represents a significant "win" for our sustainability program. By implementing this technology at our facilities, we manage residuals without relying on additional transportation, turning wood waste into a high-value, carbon-based product.

The Human Element: Our Sustainability Hidden Gem

While environmental data is critical, the human element remains a "hidden gem" of our sustainability story. The pallet industry is built on generational backgrounds and deep-rooted community ties. At 48forty, we view our workforce as a core pillar of our commitment to excellence. This human expertise fuels our national network and private fleet, which is a major differentiator in reducing carbon output.

Minimizing Carbon Footprints Through National Logistics

Our private fleet enables precise route management and the utilization of backhaul opportunities, delivering recycled pallets and immediately filling the same truck with used cores for return to our plants. By eliminating "empty miles" and exploring renewable fuels, 48forty continues to reduce the environmental footprint of pallet logistics nationwide.
